The Husqvarna Viking Opal 650 is a computerized sewing machine for sewists who want real help without learning a touchscreen. Pick your fabric and technique on the Exclusive SEWING ADVISOR keypad and it sets the stitch, length, width and speed for you. You get 160 stitches, 3 sewing fonts and 8 inches of space to the right of the needle for quilts, curtains and coats.

Why buy from Imagine Sewing & Vacuum

  • Authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer. Husqvarna Viking's warranty covers machines bought from authorized dealers, so your Opal 650 is covered by its 20-year limited warranty.
  • Sewing specialists since 1922. We've helped sewists and quilters choose the right machine for more than a century.
  • Factory-trained technicians. The people who service Husqvarna Viking machines can help with setup, thread tension and buttonhole questions, before and after you buy.
  • Free shipping on orders over $299. This machine qualifies.

Guided sewing with plenty of room

  • Settings chosen for you. Press a fabric button and a technique button such as seam, hem or buttonhole. The Exclusive SEWING ADVISOR feature picks the stitch and shows the recommended needle and tension.
  • Room for bulky projects. 8 inches (200 mm) of space to the right of the needle gives a rolled quilt or a heavy drape room to move.
  • See the stitch before you sew. The 3-inch graphic display shows the stitch in real size, plus any length or width change you make.
  • Buttonholes that match. The Sensor One-Step Buttonhole Foot sews the length you enter, and both sides sew in the same direction. You get 7 styles and a button-sewing program.
  • Sew without the pedal. Start/Stop runs the machine at one of 5 speed levels for even rows of decorative stitches.
  • Precise placement. Move the straight stitch to any of 29 needle positions for topstitching and edge stitching, and use stitches up to 7 mm wide.
  • Personal touches. Label a quilt with 3 built-in fonts, and save favorite combinations in the My Stitches menu. 3 LED lights and a built-in needle threader make setup easier.

Is the Opal 650 right for you?

It's the best fit if you sew garments, home decor and quilt tops and want guided settings and a large work area, but prefer buttons you can feel to a touchscreen.

Good to know before you buy: the Opal 650 has no automatic thread cutter or bobbin thread sensor; you trim threads on the built-in cutters. You set tension with a dial, using the number the display recommends, and raise the presser foot with a lever. It has no knee lifter and doesn't embroider. The quilting guide and free-motion foot are sold separately.

  • Want a touchscreen, automatic thread cutter and automatic tension? The Husqvarna Viking Opal 670 adds all three, plus a bobbin thread sensor and 200 stitches.
  • Quilting more than anything else? The Husqvarna Viking Opal 690Q adds the Exclusive Sensor System and includes a 1/4" piecing foot, a clear open toe foot and a free-motion foot.
  • Want to embroider too? The Husqvarna Designer Jade 35 sews and embroiders, with hoops up to 240 x 150 mm.

Expert tip

"The Opal 650 shows a recommended tension number for every stitch and fabric, so check it before you sew and match the dial to it. Most sewing lands between 4 and 6. Buttonholes and decorative stitches usually look better near 3, and heavy topstitching thread in thick fabric may need 7 to 9. Test on a scrap first, and always thread with the presser foot up so the thread seats between the tension discs."

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between the Opal 650, 670 and 690Q?

All three share 8 inches of space, 7 mm stitches and the Exclusive SEWING ADVISOR feature. The 650 uses buttons and a tension dial. The 670 adds a touchscreen, automatic thread cutter, automatic tension and a bobbin sensor. The 690Q adds the Exclusive Sensor System, which senses fabric thickness and lifts the foot for you, plus three quilting feet.

Is the Opal 650 computerized?

Yes. Settings are electronic and the graphic display shows each stitch. There's no touchscreen; you choose stitches with numbered keys.

Does the Opal 650 have an automatic thread cutter?

No. It has three manual thread cutters. The Opal 670 and 690Q cut the top and bobbin threads at the touch of a button.

Can I quilt on the Opal 650?

Yes. The 8-inch space helps with larger quilts, and you can lower the feed teeth for free-motion work. The free-motion foot and 1/4" piecing foot are sold separately.

Does it fit a walking foot?

Husqvarna Viking's accessory catalog lists its Interchangeable Dual Feed foot for the Opal series. Ask us to confirm the part before you order.
