The Smarter by Pfaff 140S is a simple mechanical sewing machine for new sewists and anyone who wants a dependable machine for mending, hemming and small projects. You pick from 21 stitches with a dial, thread the needle with the built-in threader and sew at up to 750 stitches per minute.
Why buy from Imagine Sewing & Vacuum
- Authorized Pfaff dealer. Pfaff gives its warranty only to buyers from authorized Pfaff dealers, so your 140S is covered by Pfaff's 10-year limited warranty.
- Sewing specialists since 1922. We've helped sewists and quilters choose the right machine for more than a century.
- Factory-trained technicians. The people who service Pfaff machines can help with threading, tension and buttonhole questions, before and after you buy.
- Free shipping on orders over $299. This machine qualifies.
An easy first machine from Pfaff
- Nothing to program. One dial selects the stitch and another sets the length, so there's no screen to learn.
- The stitches you actually use. 21 stitches cover straight and zigzag seams, blind hems, stretch stitches for knits, a few decorative stitches and a four-step buttonhole.
- Easier threading. The integrated needle threader pulls the thread through the needle eye, and the side cutter trims threads for the next seam.
- Straight stitch where you want it. Move the needle from center toward the right, up to 6 mm, for topstitching and edge stitching.
- Even feeding. Seven-point feed dogs support the fabric on all sides of the needle, and adjustable presser foot pressure helps with very light or heavy fabrics.
- Quick foot changes. Five snap-on presser feet come in the box, and optional Pfaff feet fit the same system.
Is the Smarter by Pfaff 140S right for you?
It's the best fit if you're learning to sew, need a machine for repairs and simple garments, or want a light second machine. It weighs 13.7 pounds and comes with a hard cover.
Good to know before you buy: the 140S is fully mechanical, with no screen, needle up/down, speed slider or start/stop button. You control speed with the foot pedal and sew buttonholes in four steps. Smarter by Pfaff is Pfaff's entry line and doesn't have IDT, Pfaff's built-in dual feed. The 6.3 inches of space to the right of the needle suits small quilting projects only.
- Want a one-step buttonhole? The Smarter by Pfaff 160S adds one, plus two more stitches, in the same size machine.
- Want push-button control and needle up/down? The Smarter by Pfaff 260C is computerized, with 27 stitches, start/stop and a speed slider.
- Want IDT dual feed for quilts and slippery fabrics? The Pfaff select 4.2 is mechanical, with IDT, 40 stitches and 6.8 inches of space.
- Want IDT in a portable computerized machine? The Pfaff passport 2.0 has 70 stitches and a speed slider.
Expert tip
"Before you sew a buttonhole on the 140S, push the buttonhole foot all the way back and use the red marks on the foot to measure the length. Sew a test on a scrap of the same fabric with interfacing, stopping both sides at the same mark. Turning the top thread tension down slightly gives a neater buttonhole."

Frequently asked questions
Is the Smarter by Pfaff 140S computerized?
No. Pfaff lists it as a mechanical machine. You choose stitches and set the length and width with dials.
What's the difference between the 140S and the 160S?
Both have 6 mm stitch width, 6.3 inches of space and 750 stitches per minute. The 160S has 23 stitches and a one-step buttonhole sized by your button. The 140S has 21 stitches and a four-step buttonhole.
How is Smarter by Pfaff different from other Pfaff machines?
Smarter by Pfaff is Pfaff's simpler entry line. It uses Pfaff's presser foot system but doesn't have IDT, the built-in dual feed on machines such as the select 4.2 and the passport models.
Can the 140S sew denim?
Pfaff says it handles light to medium-heavy fabrics such as denim, corduroy and quilting cotton.
Can I lower the feed dogs?
Yes. A switch at the back of the free arm drops them for sewing on buttons and darning. A free-motion foot isn't included.
