The Baby Lock Sashiko 2 recreates the look of sashiko, the traditional hand-sewn running stitch, with even stitches and an even space between each one. It's a specialty machine for quilters and sewists who want hand-stitched lines on quilts, garments and home decor without sewing every stitch by hand. Baby Lock's exclusive Creative Project Book and Kit comes in the box, so your first project is ready to go.

- Factory-trained technicians. The people who service Baby Lock machines can help with bobbin threading, tension and latch wire questions, before and after you buy.
- Free shipping on orders over $299. This machine qualifies.
Hand-stitched looks without the hand stitching
- A true running stitch. A specialty needle works with a latch wire to form each stitch from the bobbin thread and leave a clean space before the next, so your lines look sewn by hand.
- You set the rhythm. Separate levers set stitch length and spacing, each from 2 to 5 mm, so you can sew long stitches with short gaps or the reverse.
- Curves, circles and traditional patterns. The presser foot height dial switches between straight sewing and free-flow curved sewing, so you can turn the fabric to follow circles and classic sashiko designs.
- One stitch at a time when you need it. Specialty Stitch Mode sews one stitch and space each time you press the foot control, for braiding, couching, cross-stitching and trim.
- Know what the needle will do next. A color LED panel shows whether the next move is a stitch or a space, and when the machine is in bobbin-loading position or Specialty Stitch Mode.
- No backstitching. Each stitch locks as it forms, so the stitching won't unravel when you cut the thread. For items that get heavy use, knot the tails on the back.
- Quilt through the layers. Stitch through a quilt sandwich with low- or high-loft batting, and use the included quilting guide to space parallel rows evenly.
Is the Sashiko 2 right for you?
It's the best fit if you love the look of hand quilting or sashiko and want to add it to quilts, garments and home decor in far less time than stitching by hand. It works as a second machine next to the one you piece and sew with.
Good to know before you buy: the Sashiko 2 sews one stitch, so it can't piece quilt tops, sew garment seams or make buttonholes. Baby Lock recommends lightweight to medium-weight fabrics, no knits or stretch fabrics, and no more than 4 layers, depending on fabric weight. You can't sew back over a line you've already stitched. The extension table and Sashiko Accessory Kit are sold separately.
- Want hand-stitch-look patterns on a full sewing and quilting machine? The Baby Lock Ballad has 771 stitches, including 3 hand stitch patterns, and 11.25 inches of space.
- Need an everyday machine for piecing and garments? The Baby Lock Lyric has 250 stitches and comes with a walking foot, a 1/4" quilting foot and an extension table.
- Want fabric sensing and three free-motion feet? The Baby Lock Soprano has 300 stitches and a pivot feature.
Expert tip
"Every Sashiko stitch comes from the bobbin, so wind several bobbins with a quality 100% polyester thread in the 30 to 100 weight range before you start. Begin each line with the thread tail held in the thread cutter on the side cover, because a loose tail can jam the machine. If stitches start skipping, check the needle and latch wire first and swap in the spares from the box."

Frequently asked questions
Does the Baby Lock Sashiko use a top thread?
No. The Sashiko 2 forms its stitch with bobbin thread only. The specialty needle catches and releases the bobbin thread to form each stitch, and the spool on top is for winding bobbins.
What thread should I use in the Sashiko 2?
Baby Lock recommends 100% long-staple polyester from 30 to 100 weight. Its thread chart also lists 30 to 70 weight cotton and 40 weight rayon. Avoid woolly nylon, monofilament and threads that snag easily.
Can I quilt a whole quilt with the Sashiko 2?
Yes. It stitches through a quilt sandwich for a hand-quilted look. Baby Lock advises no more than 4 layers, depending on fabric weight, and the optional Sashiko extension table helps support larger quilts.
Can the Sashiko 2 sew regular seams?
No. It only sews the sashiko running stitch, which leaves gaps between stitches, so plan to use it alongside a regular sewing machine.
What is the "project" that comes with this machine?
It's Baby Lock's exclusive Creative Project Book and Kit, which Baby Lock lists as a standard accessory with the Sashiko 2.
