The Baby Lock Soprano is a computerized sewing and quilting machine that adjusts to your fabric for you. Its Automatic Fabric Sensor System sets the presser foot pressure, its pivot feature helps you turn corners and follow appliqué curves, and it comes with 300 stitches and 16 presser feet, including a walking foot and three free-motion quilting feet.
Why buy from Imagine Sewing & Vacuum
- Authorized Baby Lock dealer. Only authorized retailers can issue Baby Lock warranties, so your Soprano is covered by Baby Lock's 25-year limited warranty.
- Sewing specialists since 1922. We've helped sewists and quilters choose the right machine for more than a century.
- Factory-trained technicians. The people who service Baby Lock machines can help with setup, free-motion and pivot questions, before and after you buy.
- Free shipping on orders over $299. This machine qualifies.
A quilting machine that does more of the work
- The right settings for each fabric. The Automatic Fabric Sensor System and automatic tension give you the presser foot pressure and thread tension your fabric needs, from one layer of cotton to a quilt sandwich.
- Smooth corners and curves. With pivot on, the Soprano stops with the needle in the fabric and lifts the presser foot for you, so you can turn corners and stitch around appliqué shapes.
- Three free-motion feet included. Drop the feed dogs and choose the closed "C", open-toe "O" or echo "E" quilting foot for stippling, outlining or echo quilting.
- Walking foot and 1/4" foot in the box. The walking foot keeps quilt layers feeding together, and the 1/4" quilting foot with guide helps your blocks line up.
- Room to support a quilt. The included 12-5/8" × 20-3/4" extension table carries the weight of your project, and the knee lift keeps your hands on the fabric.
- Fast and easy to run. Sew up to 850 stitches per minute, thread the needle with a lever and drop in a Quick-Set bobbin. One-touch buttons cut threads, raise the foot and move the needle.
- 300 stitches for garments and decor. 99 utility stitches with 10 one-step buttonhole styles, 94 decorative stitches, satin and cross stitches, and 5 alphabets, all up to 7 mm wide. Built-in stitch memory saves your favorite settings.
Is the Soprano right for you?
It's the best fit if you quilt and sew garments and want a fabric sensor, pivot and a full set of quilting feet without moving up to a touch-screen model. At 21.3 pounds, it travels well to retreats.
Good to know before you buy: with 8.3 inches of space to the right of the needle, a large quilt takes more rolling than on a 12-inch machine. It doesn't embroider, it has no stitch regulation for free-motion quilting, and it doesn't warn you when the bobbin is running low. The hopping quilting foot, straight stitch needle plate and large-spool thread stand are sold separately.
- Don't need the fabric sensor or pivot feature? The Baby Lock Lyric has 250 stitches, the same 8.3 inches of space, a walking foot and an extension table, with 14 feet instead of 16.
- Want more space and a color touch screen? The Baby Lock Ballad has 11.25 inches of space, 771 stitches, a 7-inch color touch screen and a Compact Digital Dual Feed system.
- Mostly quilting big projects? The Baby Lock Jazz II gives you 12 inches of space and 1,000 stitches per minute, with 28 stitches chosen by dial.
Expert tip
"The Soprano doesn't warn you when the bobbin is running low, so wind two or three bobbins before you start a quilt and check the clear bobbin cover at the end of each row. Cotton batting makes a lot of lint, so turn the machine off and brush out the bobbin area and feed dogs each time you change a bobbin."

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the Baby Lock Soprano and the Lyric?
Both have 8.3 inches of space, 850 stitches per minute, a walking foot and an extension table. The Soprano adds the Automatic Fabric Sensor System, automatic tension and pivot, plus 300 stitches instead of 250 and 16 feet instead of 14.
What does the Automatic Fabric Sensor System do?
An internal sensor detects the thickness of the fabric as you sew and adjusts the presser foot pressure automatically, so the fabric feeds smoothly.
How does the pivot feature work?
Select pivot, and the Soprano stops with the needle down and raises the presser foot automatically. Turn the work, and the foot lowers again when you start sewing.
Is the Soprano good for garment sewing?
Yes. It has 99 utility stitches, 10 one-step buttonholes, zipper and blind stitch feet, and adjustable presser foot pressure for knits.
Can the Soprano embroider?
No. You can stitch names and labels with its 5 alphabets, but it doesn't use embroidery hoops or designs.
