The Husqvarna Viking Amber Air S|400 is a 4/3/2-thread serger for sewists who want professional seams and edges without the usual looper-threading struggle. Air carries the thread through both loopers, a built-in threader handles both needles, and 15 stitches cover everyday seams, rolled hems and flatlock at up to 1,300 stitches per minute.

Why buy from Imagine Sewing & Vacuum

  • Authorized Husqvarna Viking dealer. Husqvarna Viking gives its limited warranty only to buyers from authorized dealers, so your Amber Air S|400 is covered for up to 5 years.
  • Sewing specialists since 1922. We've helped sewists and garment makers choose the right machine for more than a century.
  • Factory-trained technicians. The people who service Husqvarna Viking machines can help with air threading, tension and rolled hem questions, before and after you buy.
  • Free shipping on orders over $299. This machine qualifies.

Easy threading, clean finishes

  • Loopers thread with air. Set the machine to Threading, push the thread end into the looper hole, then raise and lower the looper threader lever. Air sends the thread through to the looper tip.
  • No squinting at the needles. The built-in needle threader has an R and L setting, so it threads both the right and left needle.
  • Color-coded, lay-in thread paths. Colored guides show the threading order, and threads lay straight into the tension discs.
  • Flat seams on knits and sheers. Differential feed from 0.5 to 2.0 stops knits from stretching and lightweight fabrics from puckering. Turn it up and it gathers fabric for ruffles.
  • Rolled hems without swapping parts. Sew 2- or 3-thread rolled hems by moving the stitch finger lever to R. You don't change the presser foot or stitch plate.
  • Room for thick layers. Extra presser foot lift raises the foot up to 7 mm for sweatshirt fleece and multiple layers.
  • Control over every edge. Adjust stitch length (1 to 5 mm), cutting width and presser foot pressure, and lock the upper cutter out of the way for flatlock and pintucks.
  • Built-in 2-thread converter. It's built onto the upper looper, so there's no loose part to lose.

Is the Amber Air S|400 right for you?

It's the best fit if you sew garments, knits, home décor or quilts and want a dependable 4-thread serger that removes the hardest part of serging: threading the loopers.

Good to know before you buy: the S|400 is a 2-needle, 4-thread overlock machine. It doesn't sew cover stitch or chain stitch, and it has no free arm, knee lift or extension table. You set the four tension dials yourself, using the stitch chart in the manual. Only the standard presser foot comes with it; Husqvarna Viking's utility and embellishment feet kits are sold separately.

  • Want cover stitch hems in the same machine? The Husqvarna Viking Amber Air S500 adds 5-thread stitches, cover stitch, chain stitch, push-button air threading and a free arm.
  • Want a touchscreen that sets everything for your fabric? The Husqvarna Viking Amber Air S600 has 26 stitches, a color touchscreen and the SEWING ADVISOR feature.
  • Prefer Pfaff? The Pfaff Admire Air 5000 is also a 4/3/2-thread serger with 15 stitches, lever air threading and a built-in needle threader.
  • Happy to thread by hand? The Pfaff Hobbylock 2.5 sews 15 stitches with an auto tension dial and threads the traditional way.

Expert tip

"If a looper won't air-thread, check the setup before you blame the machine. The Threading/Sewing switch has to be on Threading, the handwheel locked at its threading mark, and the looper selection lever pointed at the looper you're threading. Trim the thread end clean and push at least 2 cm into the hole. If it still stalls, clean the lint out of the looper threading pipe. And if a looper thread breaks while you sew, rethread both loopers, then the needles."

Frequently asked questions

Does the Amber Air S|400 thread the needles with air?

No. Air threading covers the upper and lower loopers. You thread the two needles with the built-in needle threader, which works for both the left and right needle.

What's the difference between the Amber Air S|400 and the S500?

The S|400 is a 4/3/2-thread serger with 15 stitches and lever-operated air threading. The S500 adds a fifth thread, cover stitch, chain stitch and safety stitches for 23 stitches in all, plus push-button air threading, a stitch selection dial that sets tension, a free arm, a knee lift and an extension table.

Can the S|400 sew a cover stitch hem?

No. It's an overlock-only machine with no chain looper. For cover stitch hems on knits, choose the Amber Air S500 or S600.

Is the S|400 good for beginners?

Yes. Threading the loopers is what frustrates most new serger owners, and air threading takes care of it.

Can I sew rolled hems without changing the foot?

Yes. Move the stitch finger lever to R, set the stitch length to R and thread for a 2- or 3-thread rolled edge. You don't need to change the presser foot or stitch plate.
