The genuine Miele SF-AA 50-1 Active AirClean filter is the activated-charcoal exhaust filter for Miele's 50-series vacuums: the Guard L1, M1 and S1, the Complete C2 and C3, and the Compact C1 and C2. Miele designed it to filter unpleasant odors and calls it ideal for homes with pets or smokers. Each box holds one filter, and Miele recommends a new one about once a year.
Fits these Miele vacuums
Not for the Classic C1, Complete C1 or Dynamic U1. Those vacuums take the smaller 30-series frame, so order the SF-AA 30-1 Active AirClean instead. A 50 won't fit a 30-series vacuum, and a 30 won't fit a Guard.
30 or 50? Go by the model name, not the bag. Guard, Complete C2, Complete C3 and Compact models take the 50. Classic C1, Complete C1 and Dynamic U1 take the 30. Bags don't settle it, because GN bags fit both the Classic C1 and the Complete C3. On the filter itself, the 50 has four tabs along the top, a tab at each end and a wide gray pull tab centered on the bottom edge. Still unsure? Send us your model and we'll confirm the fit.

Tackles odors. Activated charcoal filters unpleasant odors out of the exhaust air, and Miele says it also neutralizes them, which makes it a fit for pet owners.

Need HEPA instead? For dust-sensitive households, the SF-HA 50-1 HEPA AirClean fits the same slot. Use one or the other, not both.

When to replace it

About once a year: Miele says to change 50-series exhaust filters after about 50 operating hours, roughly a year of average use.

Guard L1: change it when the exhaust filter indicator lights up, check the motor protection filter at the same time, then hold the + foot switch for 3 seconds to reset the light.

To install: open the dust compartment lid, pull the old filter forward and lift it out. Set the new one in, then press it backward on both sides until it clicks.
Bags for 50-series vacuums: Type TU for the Guard L1 and S1, Type CO for the Guard M1, Type GN for the Complete C2 and C3, and Type FJM for the Compact C1 and C2.
Expert tip
"Charcoal works quietly, so you notice it most when it stops. If pet smell starts coming out of the exhaust before the year is up, change the filter early. And if you just switched from the flat AirClean filter, keep that filter grille in a drawer. You'll need it to go back."

Will the SF-AA 50-1 fit my Classic C1?
No. The Classic C1 takes the 30-series frame. Order the SF-AA 30-1 instead.
Is this the filter that came in my Guard L1 Cat & Dog?
Miele lists an Active AirClean filter as standard on the Guard L1 Cat & Dog, and the Guard L1 takes 50-series filters, so this is its replacement.
What does "No TimeStrip" mean?
Miele's earlier SF-AA 50 (part 9616110) carried a TimeStrip filter change indicator. The SF-AA 50-1 doesn't have one. Miele lists the same vacuums and the same once-a-year interval for both.
